Frisbee

Welcome to my frisbee page!

For the more clueless amoungst you, a frisbee is a plastic disc, right, which when thrown with enough spin will glide and hover through the air. Got it now? There are many different games which can be played with frisbees however I will only mention four of these here, these are Freestyle, Ultimate, Double Disc Court (DDC) & Guts. All these games are extreamly active out door games, they can be a lot of fun, once you've picked up the basics.

Freestyle

This is my favourite frisbee game at the moment. It is best played with a (160g) "Freestyle" frisbee. (The different types of frisbee will be described later.) It is essentially a tricks game. The idea is to pass the frisbee around between your friends while trying to pull off insane catches and throws. The way I play it there is no competitive nature to the game, it's just for fun.

At present my most insane throw is the Theast Bentener. (This is my name for the throw, it may have a proper name but I can't be bothered to find it out.) To do the Theast Bentener you must jump quite high and raise your legs, almost to the horizontal. In this position you then flick the frisbee under both legs. If you manage to land correcly, without breaking anything and get a decent throw in the right direction you've just tamed the Theast Bentener. To master it you've just got to get the timing.

The Theast Bentener is often refered to as "BenTen".

Flower

My best throw is a beast but my best catch is still fairly basic. I call it "No-Low". It is very simple, again its a matter of timing and hand-eye co-ordination. When the frisbee comes towards you at knee to waist height raise one leg and catch the disc with the same hand, beneath the leg. This is easily tamed.

Ultimate

Best played with an (175g) "Ultimate" frisbee. This is a team sport, it combines elements of basketball, football and rugby. The game is played by two teams of seven on a 40 by 70 yard field with 25 yard endzones. The object of the game is to pass the frisbee to a team mate standing in the endzone. I don't have space or time to go through the entire rule book and in any case, that is done better elsewhere. For external links go to the links page.

DDC

DDC, short for Double Disc Court is a game of speed, agility and weasel like cunning. This game is great for the keen tactition as it's all about strategy and the ability to throw well. This time it's two on two, with each team defending a 17 metre square court. Also this game is played with two frisbees at once. The courts are 13m apart and the aim is to throw the frisbee to land in your opponent's court. You score if the disc lands and stays in the opponents court or if the opponent drops a catch. The "enemies" get a point when your throw lands outside their court. If any team is touching the two frisbees at the same time, the other team gains 2 points.

Frisbee

Guts

This is the most painful of all the frisbee games mentioned here. Two players stand 14m apart and take it in turns to dish out their most powerful, devastating and deadly shots. You score a point when a throw is within your opponents reach, but not caught cleanly with one hand.

Different Frisbees

There are a multitude of different types of frisbee that you can buy. Here I will only talk about two types. Freestyle type frisbees are great for insane catches as they float slowly in the air. Ultimate frisbees will travel fast and straight over a long distance. The official frisbee maker is Wham-O but other makes like DiscCraft are equally good. Try to avoid el cheapo makes. Links to the Wham-O and DiscCraft websites are on the links page.
